Football betting is one of the most popular forms of sports betting anywhere in the world. Being one of the most popular sports in the world may have something to do with it, but the sheer volume of bets and different betting options available contribute to the large community of dedicated people who bet on football.

Since football is so popular, there are many more different types of bets that can be placed. To a novice who is new to online betting, it can be quite intimidating. Let’s examine some of the most popular bets and how they are structured.

Game Outcome Bet: This is the most popular football bet. It is a bet on the final outcome of the game. The main thing that some people have trouble understanding is the “spread”.

Unlike in hockey or in some other sports, bookmakers use a spread to even out the probability of winning your bet. Since not all teams are equally matched and have a 50/50 chance of winning (in fact, some games are quite lopsided), the spread is necessary to make the betting on each team more equal, and give more people a chance to win.

Two teams, team A and team B, are playing a football game. Team A is 4-0, and team B is 0-4. Obviously team A is a superior team. Instead of offering the game straight up, bookmakers add a spread. It may be 7.5, 14.5, or even 21.5 points. What this means is that if you bet on team A, for you to win your bet, they have to beat team B by at least the spread. If the spread was 14.5 and team A only won 27-20, the people who bet on team B would win, even though their team lost. If team A won 41-20, people who bet on them would win, because they beat the other team by more than 14.5 points. This is called covering the spread. As you can see, this is a way of evening out the chances of a bettor winning their bet.

Over/Under: like almost all other forms of sports, an over/under bet is offered. It is structured with a decimal point, like 45.5, so that there are no pushes on under/over bets.

Those are the two main bets that people make on football games. But, as previously mentioned, there are tons of exotic bets that are available, especially on games like the Super Bowl. In the past, bets on who wins the beginning coin toss have been offered, and even an under/over on the time it takes to sing the national anthem. If there is a bet possible for football, chances are, a bookmaker is offering it.

Football is one of the most widely watched sports anywhere. This also means that a lot of people bet on it. It takes more than a basic knowledge of football odds to be consistently successful at picking winners, but everybody has to start somewhere…
