Avatar In The Bingo Hall

It was undoubtedly the most-heralded movie of the decade, costing nearly $200million to make and reaping nearly ten times that amount at the box office. Yet while James Cameron's Avatar was loudly hailed as the harbinger of a revolution in the methods of creating cinema, its impact could have greater repercussions on sources far outside that of the motion picture. Other industries, including that of online bingo, are bracing themselves for an unprecedented metamorphosis.

The whole notion behind the film is an exciting one. For the relatively few who have not yet seen it, the main thrust centres around the idea that human beings can be transported into the bodies of alien creatures. This theme lends itself to James Cameron's pioneering cinema technique, as the new 3D method employed allows the viewer to be transported into the world inhabited by these beings.

While the aliens do not play bingo, the processes behind their creation may mean that soon we will be able to enjoy real-life bingo in as 3D an experience as we would in our favourite bingo hall.

The filmmaking technique itself is one that is fast becoming the norm, with not only an increasing number of films distributed in this way but also the advent of the technology being used for extra-terrestrial broadcast (Sky TV is already offering 3D TV). Ergo, with low-attraction sports such as golf being heralded as incredibly watchable using the new system, imagine the potential for an already popular game such as bingo.

With the chat functions already available in most bingo rooms, the new-found 3D vision could make the rolling of the balls as exciting as the arrival of the numbers. This technology performs at its best when there is action heading towards the viewer, thus the balls would be rolling towards the screen it would be like the famous rock rolling towards the camera in Raiders Of The Lost Ark  (1981).

As though this were not excitement enough, the bingo caller himself could be computer-generated, his animated antics swinging his arms towards the camera to point at lucky winners or simply to announce the numbers.

Without a doubt, the future sits within the realm of technology. As much as online gaming is big business (especially for bingo software already, it - like any other industry - has to roll with the times. Fortunately for the end user, these advancements can only transport us into ever more exciting adventures.
